How to Delete a Sent Text Message

To delete a text message for everyone in the conversation, follow these steps:

  1. Long-press on the sent message you wish to remove.
  2. A menu will appear at the top of the screen. Tap the trash can icon, which is the delete option.
  3. You will be prompted to either “Delete for everyone” or “Delete for you.” Select “Delete for everyone.”

Once deleted, a notification stating “message deleted” will appear in its place for all participants, but the original content will be gone. The feature was tested on a Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9a and worked almost instantly.

Important Considerations

  • RCS Messaging Required: This feature only works if both the sender and receiver are using RCS messaging.
  • Time Limit: While the ability to edit a message is limited to 15 minutes after sending, the option to delete a message appears to be available for a much longer period, possibly permanently.
  • Compatibility: Google warns that users on older versions of the Messages app may still be able to see the text after it has been deleted.

Catching Up to Competitors

This update is a significant step for Google Messages, adding a feature that has been available on competing platforms like Apple's iMessage and WhatsApp for years. By introducing this function, Google ensures its messaging service remains modern and competitive. While it may not erase a message sent late at night that you regret the next morning, it offers a valuable tool for retracting something said in the heat of the moment or sent by accident.
