ChatGPT Is No Longer Stuck in the Past
OpenAI announced improvements to its GPT language models at a recent event. The company revealed the GPT-4 Turbo, an updated version of the GPT-4 model released earlier in 2022.
GPT-4 Turbo has knowledge of world events through April 2023 thanks to additional training data. It also has an increased context window of 128,000 words, allowing it to understand longer conversations and documents.
Regular GPT-4 is available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus. Bing Chat also uses GPT-4 for conversations. Previous versions like GPT-3.5 had limited understanding of recent events due to being trained on data only until January 2022.
The new GPT-4 Turbo model is said to be better at following instructions precisely and generating structured outputs like JSON. It supports parallel processing to improve performance on complex tasks.
OpenAI claims the upgraded GPT-3.5 Turbo provides a 38% boost on tasks that require specific formats. This is thanks to additional capabilities like JSON mode.
Developers now have early access to GPT-4 Turbo through OpenAI's APIs. ChatGPT Plus subscribers should gain access soon. It's unclear when free ChatGPT users may get the new models, but the GPT-4 Turbo is reportedly more cost-effective to deploy than the initial GPT-4.
OpenAI continually enhances its GPT models with new data and capabilities to improve their real-world usefulness for applications like conversational AI.
