Main Responsibilities
As a Consular Assistant, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of tasks to support the consular section of the embassy. These tasks include, but are not limited to:
1. Non-Immigrant Visa Processing
You will be responsible for processing non-immigrant visa applications, ensuring that all relevant documentation is in order and that applicants meet the eligibility requirements.
2. Fraud Investigations
You will be involved in conducting fraud investigations related to visa applications and other consular services, liaising with other government agencies as necessary.
3. Passport Services
You will assist U.S. citizens with passport applications, renewals, and other related services.
4. Consular Reports of Birth Abroad
You will process Consular Reports of Birth Abroad for U.S. citizen children born overseas to ensure they receive their U.S. citizenship.
5. Loss of Citizenship and Renunciation
You will handle cases involving the loss of U.S. citizenship and renunciation, ensuring proper documentation is submitted and procedures followed.
6. Consular Reports of Death
You will process Consular Reports of Death for U.S. citizens who pass away overseas, helping their families navigate the necessary paperwork and procedures.
7. Notarial Services
You will provide notarial services for U.S. citizens and other eligible individuals, verifying signatures and the authenticity of documents.
8. Special Consular Services
You will provide support in cases involving child custody disputes, arrests, kidnappings, welfare and whereabouts inquiries, crime victim assistance, medical emergencies, destitution, repatriation, prison visits, natural disasters, and other similar events.
9. Administrative Duties
In addition to the specific consular tasks mentioned above, you will also perform various administrative duties and provide general office support as required.
10. Public Outreach
You will have the opportunity to engage with the public and promote the goals and objectives of the Department of State, the U.S. Embassy, and the Consular Affairs section through various means, such as social media, public speaking engagements, and community events.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for the position of Consular Assistant, applicants must meet the following qualifications and requirements:
1. Experience
At least three years of experience in an administrative or government services field is required. This should include at least one year in a field involving extensive customer service and at least one year in a field involving the application of complex legal or regulatory material.
2. Education
A Bachelor's degree in law, international studies, modern languages, political science, or public administration is required. Alternatively, candidates with a Secondary School (Grade 12) education PLUS six years of relevant work experience will also be considered.
3. Language Skills
Fluency in English (Level 4 – written/spoken), including the ability to translate, is required. Candidates may be tested on their language proficiency during the selection process.
4. Computer Skills
Proficiency in MS Office Suite and general computer skills, including information and database management, is essential.
